Werewolf Woman (1976)

I love these Mill Creek movie sets.  Sure a lot of the time I end up watching really bad public domain flicks, but once in a while I stumble over a great movie that I have a blast with.  Werewolf Woman (which in true Euro sleaze fashion has many titles) is one of those movies that makes digging thru the junk worth the effort.  Well that and going off in reviews now and then for an awful movie is kind of therapeutic for me.

The movie is about a girl named Daniella Neseri.  We find that as a young girl she was attacked and assaulted by an older man.  Since then she has harbored a hatred of men, which eventually manifests itself when she becomes a Werewolf Woman like one of her ancestors.  Breaking out of a hospital she goes on a rampage with the police in pursuit as she seduces and then murders man after man.  Eventually she finds a kind man who treats her with so much kindness that she falls in love with him.  Seemingly cured she settles into life with him and slips away from the police pursuit.  But when a group of men break in and rape her after killing the man she loves she goes back to her old ways.

This is a strange, sleazy little movie that I had a blast with.  The story starts off as a nifty little Euro Trash flick with some skin and plenty of blood.  And when I say skin I mean there isn’t much left to the imagination when it comes to Annik Borel, who plays Daniella Neseri.  For much of Werewolf Woman she is sans clothing, which considering her assets isn’t a bad thing at all (Too creepy or just creepy enough?).  Part way thru the move it turns into a rape revenge flick after her boyfriend is killed.  I mean she doesn’t even “wolf” out on these guys.  She crushes a couple with a crane and then burns the other guy’s house down!  I actually kind of got a Thriller vibe from this part of the movie because the character sort of has that look to her.  Then after this she goes back to the Werewolf Woman thing for the rest of the movie, which includes a killer ending!

The opening of the movie sports a terrible bit of werewolf makeup.  Other than that the special effects are decent.  You do get some good kills and there is plenty of blood flowing across the screen.  The movie’s soundtrack has moments where it really is groovy in that awesome sleazy 70s European way.  Trust me if you have watched these kinds of movies you will get what I’m saying.  While a little dark at times the camera work and lighting is pretty decent throughout.  All in all a solid little gem that I’m surprised more people aren’t talking about.

While not a perfect movie I really enjoyed Werewolf Woman.  It alone is worth the purchase of one of the Mill Creek sets.  I’m not sure if you can pick it up anywhere else.  For more information about this on their other movies head over to the Mill Creek website at http://www.millcreekent.com/
