The Hairdressers Husband (2004)
This movie is a series of flashbacks that some creepy old French guy has from all the way back to his creepy French roots to his current time. There were two main events that shaped in as a child. One was having to wear wool swimsuits his mother hand knitted for him to the beach every day, every summer. The second was his becoming infatuated with a large, odorous hairdresser woman whose booby he once got a glimpse of as she was cutting his hair. This second event is perhaps the more important of the two when dealing with this story, the first having only taught him to “take care of his balls”. Years and years and years later, when he's no longer a creepy French kid but has become a creepy old French man he meets Matilda, a hairdresser whom he proposes too after his first haircut by her. After his second haircut she accepts his proposal and they are soon after married. The rest of the movie follows their married life, which is cozy and uneventful for the most part, revolving around only the two of them and the little barbershop. It follows their marriage right up to it's abrupt ending, after which creepy old French guy becomes crazy creepy old French guy.
This movie isn't one I'd normally watch. That said it's not bad and has some interesting moments. For some reason at certain moments the creepy old French guy puts on some Indian music and dances all over the place in this weird yet mesmerizing dance he makes up on the spot. This alone would make parts of it worth watching and could be a popular YouTube video if it weren't in the middle of a serious movie. The Hairdresser herself is fairly beautiful and the camera spends a lot of time just sort of roaming over her body. You have the idea that she has some deep dark secret in her past, but you never really get to find out what it is. She definitely has some issues. The film is very well made and well directed even if there isn't much that happens in it.
Even though it's not my cup of tea I could see someone else enjoying this movie very much. Maybe not the Gutmuncher crowd, but I'm sure that the artsy drama lovers would just eat this up. So, if you stumbled on Gutmunchers by accident, weren't scared away by the zombie theme and actually decided to read a review while your here, I'd highly recommend you check this film out. If you aren't a fan of dramas I'd stay away. This movie is available from the fine folks over at Severin films. For more information check out there website at http://www.severin-films.com/
