The Blob (1988)

A meteorite lands in Arborville, a small struggling ski resort town.  The meteorite cracks open and a gooey alien life form is revealed, ready to attach to and eat the first person to poke it with a stick, which it does.  Soon the alien blob is running rampant through Arborville, consuming all in it's path.  Who will be able to stop it?  Will it be Sheriff Herb Geller?  Or perhaps Paul Taylor, good boy jock with the help of his lovely Cheerleader girlfriend Meg Penny?  Could town bad boy Brian Flagg will step up and save the day?  Maybe Reverend Meeker will smite the foul alien beast in the name of God!  Then again, they could all just be blob chow, adding to the creature’s mass and power as it slurps up stereotypical 80's characters as if they were candy.

This is a great remake of the original 1958 flick.  It has the best of both worlds, cramming the 50's Sci-fi horror flick with 80's characters and special effects.  I love how they take time to do some character development and start several little story lines, only to have them come to abrupt ends as different characters involved in them are eaten by the blob.  They weren't really squeamish about who they killed off in this movie either, which just makes it more fun.  The special effects in this movie are good old fashioned practical effects with lots of nasty blood and gore and most of them still look pretty good today, cheesy but good.  The acting is pretty good and it has several stars in it that you will recognize when you see them.  It even throws in a little twist towards the end that sets it apart from the 50's version and gives it some of that 80's morality.

I'd definitely recommend this movie.  It has a lot to offer and is fun to watch.  It might not be as good as the original, but it's a nifty flick that you should give a try.
