Sorority Row (2009)
Some sorority sisters decide to play a prank on someone that cheated on one of them. So they make the guy think that he drugged the girl and that she died while he was basically date raping her. Though she isn’t really dead until he decides to run her thru with a tire iron so she won’t float when the go to dump the body. Now with her really dead they decide to dump the body for real. Months later they start to get text messages from the dead girl and someone starts to kill them off on the night of the big party. So they need to figure out who the killer is and stop them before everyone has died.
Yeah so this is another remake of sorts. It really doesn’t follow the story of the 1st movie, but still works hard to be a good slasher movie. Now let me give you my philosophy on what makes a good slasher movie. You need to have Boobs, Blood, and Body Count. So how does Sorority Row stack up?
Well 1st up is Boobs. The movie gives us many chances to see lovely ladies in various stages of undress and we do get some nudity. Though the main cast plays it safe, there are many changes for the extras to disrobe. Not quite as sleazy as some of the better ‘80s slasher flicks, but not bad either. Then we have the Blood. There are some decent kills in this one. We get a nifty bit with a bottle getting jammed down some ones throat. I also dug the gruesome broken leg with the bone sticking out of it. Toss in some impaled victims, a shotgun to the chest, and a flare gun for some nice kills. This leads me to my third point and that is the Body Count. We get quite a bit of killings in this movie and they are spread out nicely throughout the duration. I think there were 10 kills, but don’t hold me to that exact number. All in all as a slasher movie fan I was happy with what I saw.
Now lets discuss some other things about this movie. The story is solid and very predictable. We get the typical stalk and kill while the main characters spend much of the movie not knowing what is happening. Though I will say that I never saw the killer’s identity coming and they do a wonderful job of giving you many different suspects. And also I don’t really think there is anything wrong when you execute a familiar idea well. As I’ve already stated the movie gives me everything that I expect out of a slasher flick while keeping the story moving along. One final thing that I wanted to mention was the casting of Carrie Fisher as the woman in charge of keeping the house under control. She has a couple funny lines and is awesome in this.
So basically what we have here is an entertaining movie that doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel. It knows what the audience wants and gives it to us. I know that a lot of horror fans really disliked this when it came out. To be fair I think that this might be another example of people expecting too much. Most of the ‘80s slasher movies that people are in love with today aren’t much better if at all then this one. So if you are looking for something new I’d recommend Sorority Row.
