New York Ripper (1982)

Please note this review is not only for the movie, but also a review of the new Blu-Ray from Blue Underground.

For Fulci fans this movie is considered his most the sleaziest and sadistic film, this is of course New York Ripper.  A killer prowls the streets of New York, preying strictly on women and butchering them. The cops are always several steps behind the killer, who uses a Donald Duck voice to taunt them over the phone. It's all pretty misogynistic, violent, and brutal, and adds up to an unsavory viewing experience which is strange because I go back and watch the DVD every few months or so.

My review of this is strange because on my first viewing I was in shock of the violence and the mean spirit of the movie and its treatment to women. I am no way into harming of women and people in general but when violence is like paint for a master like Fulci you cant help but want to see the painting and it has the sleaze of the time and its New York in 1980 and I'm guessing it was like this well with out the Duck voiced killer. There are scenes with a horny mature lady getting turned on by a live sex show and meeting up with some nice young men at a bar. Also there is a red herring that I won’t spoil. The finale is quite sad and despite some of the silliness The New York Ripper is a brutal movie and the final minutes are quite tragic, but very fitting.  You will need to take a shower after this one and I’m serious.

As for the video it looks very very good for a movie of that time and origin. The colors are rich and sometimes in the case of certain body hair disturbing. The Audio is very well here too with English: DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 and English: Dolby True HD 7.1 tracks which I am not able to take full advantage of with my system.  The Extras here are "I'm an Actress!" - Interview with Zora Kerova, NYC Locations Then and Now and Theatrical Trailer, which I didn’t get a chance to watch.

In review, good movie and not for the kind hearted who can’t take the heat. One of Blue Undergrounds best efforts in HD, for more info on this title and other fine releases check out www.blue-underground.com.
