End of the Line (2007)

Karen works at a psychiatric hospital.  One night after work she boards the subway for her ride home.  Early it is established that not only is it a full moon, but there is also an eclipse (I suppose lunar, but they never follow up on it).  The train ride starts off creepy enough with a sleazy guy hitting on her at the station, but things seem to be better after she meets Mike, who comes to her aid.  That is until the members of a church all get the same page and start to kill everyone.  Their leader has told them that it is judgment day and they need to save as many souls as possible.  And by saving them he means doing them in with the knives and swords that they all carry!  The rest of the movie is Karen, Mike, and the other survivors trying to make it out of the subway alive.

If you follow the site at all you know that last year I bought up a ton of DVDs from a local store that was going out of business.  End of the Line was one of those discs and has been sitting in my to watch pile since.  Man I’m glad that I finally checked it out.  Right from the start (a killer jump scare) I was hooked.  The story and characters are so well written that you are sucked right into what is going on.  Initially I though I was in store for a creature feature with creepy supernatural creatures in the darkness.  But when the movie changes it up and we get the crazy zealots running around it works.  I don’t want to say much more, other then after a really entertaining movie that I thought I had figured out it throws you a little curve at the end that is genius.

I know that this is a lower budget movie, but you wouldn’t know that while watching it.  The underground locations look great and add a fun spooky atmosphere to the flick.  This is helped by good camera work and lighting.  The filmmakers responsible for this one really know how to shoot a movie.  But what really blew me away were the special effects.  There are a few CGI shots in the movie, but they work well and I have no complaints.  This is a very bloody movie.  You get several people stabbed to death, a knife thru a hand, a beheading, an axe to the noggin’, several hammer hits, and a family brought together in a most disturbing way.

It isn’t often that I sit down to watch a newer horror movie that brings it like End of the Line does.  You have a cool story with interesting twists and turns, characters that I dig, and some good gore.  So this one slipped past you when it came out do yourself a favor and track down a copy, it will be worth your time.  I recommend End of the Line.
