Children of the Corn (1985)

The staple of HBO back in the 80s has came to Blu Ray, Children of the Corn has been seen by most horror fans including myself. Release by New World Pictures in 1985 it was nice to see the logo again.

The movie opens with kids in a small town killing all the adults and taking over.  3 years later a couple (Linda Hamilton and Peter Horton) traveling to his new job as a doctor hit a boy in the middle of the road.  But the boy was already dead his throat slashed.  The couple looking for help end up in the small town and find out the town’s secret.  The kids are being led by a pint size Isaac who seems to be in contact with an evil force they call he who is behind the rows (of corn that is).

The couple first meets a little girl who can see the future and draws it out.  This is where Linda Hamilton is captured by the kids led by Malachi a red haired terror who has his own ideas on how things should be run.  This leads the Husband helped by the girl’s bother to where the kids are and there we see the violence these little kids can dish out with the doctor stabbed and the struggle between Isaac and Malachi escalates and the couple are on the run with the He who walks behind the rows appearing to bring hell to the cornfields

To me the film has just been tossed in there with all the bad sequels that followed, which basically dilutes the memory of the first movie. Seeing this movie after very long time I was happy with the film including it’s the first time in widescreen plus the HD transfer which is very good. The colors look great considering the films low budget roots. The audio is good with a great score in my opinion.

The extras are excellence but what do you expect from Red Shirt Pictures. It has commentary by the director and producer, plus actors John Franklin and Courtney Gains. Linda Hamilton talks about working on the film in “It was the eighties” in HD, a very cool talk with the actress. A making of Children of the Corn, Sights and Sounds of Children of the Corn with the Production Designer and Composer is also included.

In the end we have a very fun movie that goes at a very fast pace and has a very memorable pint sized evil preacher Isaac. Still entertaining after 25 years and with great transfers and extras this is a good example of how to treat an 80’s horror movie.
