Attack of the Monsters (1969)
Some kids see a spaceship come down and land near their home while looking through a telescope. The next day they ride out to find it and once they do the 2 science savvy lads enter the spaceship while the little girl with them stays outside, too scared to enter. The boys accidentally start up the flying saucer that rises up and speeds out into space. After being saved by Gamera, a gigantic jet propelled turtle with huge tusks, they continue on. The spaceship is so fast that they lose Gamera as they travel to another planet. After exploring the planet, which has a few of it's own giant monsters, the lads find 2 alien women. The alien women explain that their society was extremely advanced and they used their power to control the monsters to use as guardians, but somehow a mixed up computer created uncontrollable monsters as well. All of the others in the alien society got onto a huge spaceship to leave the planet, but it crashed and the 2 alien women are all that's left. As the movie goes on the alien women decide to eat the boys’ brains to gain their knowledge of Earth. Just as the alien women are about to carry out this plan Gamera comes to their planet, intent on saving the children. Will Gamera be able to fight his way past the aliens guardian monster Guiron and save the boys or are they doomed?
This movie is another classic example of a 60's B movie. It's in the style of old Godzilla movies and the special effects include guys running around in big rubber monster suits fighting each other with some original Star Trek style teleporters and laser blasts thrown in here and there. The kooky sets and costumes are pretty funny and should give you a chuckle. The wacky soundtrack adds to the atmosphere of the movie. The acting is what you'd expect from a Japanese giant monster movie and really it wouldn't be the same if it were actually good acting. Really though, it's the monster fight scenes that you watch these movies for and this movie has some of the best around. It's amazing how expressive people wearing giant rubber monster suits can be.
Cheeserrific! If you like the old Godzilla movies but want something just a bit different then here it is! Even more over the top than most of the Japanese B monster movies. It's not really a good movie, but it's a fun one to watch.
